Today I'd love to hear about YOUR favorite community resources.
What organization do you most frequently mention to those seeking assistance? What helpful information do you find yourself often sharing with others? What agency has an admirable mission and does work that inspires you? I appreciate the collective wisdom of our community, and always learn lots from our conversations, so thank you for sharing! They are also running a sock drive, so go here to contribute socks, body lotion, cleaning supplies, and more directly to their operation.

In honor of tomorrow's election day, today I would like to mention the resources designed to provide equal access to the voting process in the city of San Francisco: Access for Voters with Disabilities: Information about mail-in ballots, audio information, TTY, assistive voting devices, personal assistance, curbside voting, and other tools. Multilingual Voter Service: Voter information in Chinese and Spanish; Filipino (Tagalog) information coming in 2015. Happy voting, everyone! Dimensions Clinic, housed at the Castro-Mission Health Center, offers low-cost health services for queer, transgender and questioning youth ages 12 to 25. Medical and mental health staff provide trans-friendly medical care and mental health services. They also have a weekly trans and gender-variant youth group for those under 25, and a new trans group for 12-15 year-old youth. This Wellness Center aims to address the four cornerstones of human well-being: stress management, nutrition, exercise and spirituality/community building. Staff use a harm reduction model to allow clients to participate on the level that best fits their needs. October's schedule of classes offers acupuncture, yoga, journal writing, cooking instruction, substance abuse groups, meditation, foot care, poetry, women's/men's support groups, and theater games/song classes. I am always thankful for the continued existence of this valued community organization, located in the heart of SOMA. Let me know if you have questions about this service!

If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity, or if your organization wants to develop a volunteer program, The Volunteer Center can help you connect with thousands of placements across San Francisco and the Peninsula. Are you looking for an on-going commitment or a one-time job? Do you want to show up solo or be part of a group? Whether you're interested in mentoring a student, delivering or serving meals, pet care, gardening, or writing newsletters from home, they have an endless list to match everyone’s interests.
The Volunteer Center is a staff favorite in the employment program, as many job-seekers request our assistance in connecting with placements to enhance their resumes, bolster self-efficacy and self-esteem, give back to the community, network with peers, and practice punctuality and dependability. The Center also presents opportunities for Bay Area residents to serve on the boards of directors of local nonprofit organizations, which helps develop strong leadership skills and community connections. Go check out their extensive database today and get inspired! Additionally, they offer a Community Health Worker Training Program, a 12-month job training for former clients and other members of the community.
I am very pleased with the support provided by my recent referral to their parenting classes (which provide on-site childcare AND free lunch). Take a look at what their services can offer, and PASS IT ON! Someone you know might benefit greatly from this program. |
